My Favorite Neighborhoods for Mid-century Modern Homes
White Rock/Lakewood/Lake Highlands -
Despite their close proximity to Downtown Dallas, the tree-lined, rolling streets of the Lake Districts help them maintain their small town charm - making them popular with families and young professionals. In addition to having beautiful White Rock Lake as their highlight, the Dallas Arboretum, Bath House Cultural Center, golf courses (private and public) and Samuell Grand Park offer residents a multitude of venues for entertainment and leisure.
Other neighborhoods in and around the Lake Districts include: Lochwood, Little Forest Hills/Forest Hills, Casa Linda, Casa View (home to an enclave of Cliff May Homes) Lake Park Estates and Merriman Park/University Manor.
Oak Cliff/Kessler Park -
Separated from the rest of the city by the Trinity River but only a stone's throw to Downtown, Oak Cliff boasts its unique independence, identity and history. Oak Cliff is well known for its impeccably landscaped neighborhoods and exceptional housing values. It is also home to many boutique shops, art galleries and a variety of cultural and recreational activities that allow for a high quality of life.
Other neighborhoods in and around Oak Cliff include: Steven's Park, Wynnewood Village, Kiestwood, Kessler Woods, Winnetka Heights and Bishop Arts.
Midway Hollow/Midway Hills/Disney Streets -
Just 10 minutes from Love Field the Midway Hollow/Hills neighborhood is characterized by large yards with big, beautiful mature trees and homes that are diverse in architectural style. The Disney Streets in particular boast some of the best MCM homes in Dallas! The residents are actively involved in their community and with each other. A evening stroll along almost any street would be characterized by runners, walkers, bicyclists and dogs..walking their owners!
Other neighborhoods in and around Midway Hollow/Hills include: Disney Streets, Sparkman Club
Favorite Areas for New Architect Designed Modern Homes
Urban Reserve - an award winning development located east of 1-75 in Dallas. Urban Reserve is set upon 13 acres and has access to a variety of popular spots, including parks and trails. This modernist community was designed to be a place of architectural design, tranquility, "green living" and energy efficiency. There are 50 custom modernist homes designed by over 25 different leading architects including Max Levy, Russell Buchanan, Dan Shipley, Lionel Morrison and Josh Nimmo. Homes here range from 1200 square feet to over 4500 sq ft. Prices generally range from the high $400's to over $3M.
Urban Commons - COMING SOON This is the newest modernist community featuring more affordable modern homes designed by some of the best architects around. Urban Commons is the brain child of the same development team that was behind Urban Reserve, the award winning modernist development nearby. Urban Commons will consist of around 80 homes with prices expected to range between $400K- to $650K for most of the homes. Construction on the houses is expected to begin in Spring 2019. Uptown East/East Village - This is one of the hottest up and coming areas in the city for cool modern architecture. Located just east of Central Expressway between Haskell and Henderson Avenue, the location is close to downtown and West Village offering easy access to shopping, dining and entertainment. One of the most unique features of this area is the numerous single family attached (think duplex) homes that have been built here. These are not the old school duplexes you might be thinking of. These are cool modern homes designed by some of the best young architects including Josh Nimmo, Far+Dang and AGruppo Architects. Many were built by award-winning modern builder Alan Kagan who's Dwelling series of modern home set the standard for modern urban single family homes offering a private yard, no HOA fees and a low-maintenance lock and leave lifestyle. Prices in this area have been on a steady increase of the last few years.
Kessler Woods - Located next to Kessler Park, this spectacular development of modern, sustainable architecture in Oak Cliff called Kessler Woods is unique and special. It’s an enclave full of gorgeous homes designed and built by a who’s who of modern architecture and construction. The materials selections are amazing, as is the landscaping and views from the immense panes of glass covering these beautiful homes. It reminds me a lot of Urban Reserve in the northern reaches of Lake Highlands.
